It started with one whistleblower, but now involves dozens of investigators, has created a standoff between the Department of Justice and lawmakers and threatens Mexico’s diplomatic relationship with the United States.

Friction is growing over the probe into the failed “Project Gunrunner” program — run by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms that intended to stop the flow of guns to criminals in Mexico. Whistleblowers claim the bureau actually encouraged the illegal sale of firearms to known criminals, then allowed those guns to be smuggled to Mexico and tracked.

On Tuesday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) went after Attorney General Eric Holder for refusing to answer questions and subpoenas for documents that implicate who approved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives project that allowed guns purchased illegally in U.S. to be smuggled into Mexico on behalf of the drug cartels with the knowledge and consent of the ATF.

“We’re not looking at straw buyers, Mr. Attorney General, we’re looking at you,” Issa said. “We’re looking at you, we’re looking at your key people who knew or should’ve known about this.”

Holder shot back.

“The notion that somehow or another that this Justice Department is responsible for those deaths, that assertion is offensive,” Holder said, referring to the death of American Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

“What if it’s accurate, Mr. Attorney General?” Issa responded. “What am I going to tell Agent Terry’s mother about how he died at the hands of a gun that was videotaped as it was being sold to a straw purchaser fully expecting it to end up in the hands of drug cartels?”

Holder responded. “We’ll have to see exactly what happened with regard to the guns that are an issue there.”

Also on Tuesday, in a letter to the attorney general signed by both Issa and Sen.Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), the Congressmen say they are “disappointed that you do not appear to be taking this issue seriously enough”. Grassley, in a handwritten postscript, tells Holder he is being ‘ill-served’ by staff who are not telling him the whole story.

The theatre on the Hill is an outgrowth of an ongoing investigation that dates back to allegations two months ago from ATF agent John Dodson, a lone voice and career agent who told Fox News in March that the tactic of letting guns “walk” was approved by his supervisors in the Phoenix ATF office over the objections of several agents.

“How many people have to die?” he said. “We don’t know where those guns are gonna end up. I’ve been here since the beginning. Tell me I didn’t do the things that I did. Tell me you didn’t order me to do the things I did. Tell me it didn’t happen.”

My Take – For Monday, 03/07/11:

The daily drama.

Gas is up 33 cents a gallon over the past two weeks alone and it’s not even Spring yet.

Charlie Sheen has an Internet show called “Sheen’s Korner” with the positioning statement “You’re either in his corner or with the trolls”.  Oh, and he’s officially been fired by Warner Brothers.
The Middle East is on fire because Barack Hussein Obama and the Google guys thought that might be kinda fun.

Donald Trump wants to commit troops to Libya and establish a no-fly zone and I guess that’s supposed to show he has presidential leadership qualities.

There’s a video making the rounds on the Internet that shows General Petraeus and Secretary of Defense Gates sharing a joke about attacking Libya.  You know how funny war can be.

And the White House is praising Muslims for the role they’re playing in fighting Islamic terrorism.

I thought they were the cause of it.

I’m Jim Sumpter and that’s “My Take”.

My Take – For Thursday, 03/03/11:

The right thing to do.

Attorney General Eric Holder says he and Mr. Obama have concluded that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and therefore, the Obama Administration will no longer provide legal defense for DOMA.

It’s hard to imagine how a man most would recognize as the President of the United States, and the highest ranking law enforcement officer in our country could be so overtly involved in an act that is absolutely unconstitutional and is in fact an impeachable offense.

The concept is one we’ve heard many times:  what makes our form of government so unique is we are a nation governed by the rule of law, not by the whim of individuals.  Barack Obama and Eric Holder cannot pick and choose the laws they are charged to uphold.

They should be impeached and removed from office; sadly, Congress is too compromised to do the right thing.

I’m Jim Sumpter and that’s “My Take”.

My Take – For Wednesday, 03/02/11:

Imagine how Israel feels.

This is Jim Sumpter

The world is watching the upheaval, the unrest, the meltdown or whatever is happening in the Middle East.

Libya, Tunisia, Egypt…even Saudi Arabia…are all in various stages of coming apart as sovereign entities, and no one in the west really knows exactly what’s going on, but this is for sure – if an Islamic Caliphate is formed, then the world as we know it is over.

And amid all of this, surrounded on all sides by enemies, except on the coast of the Mediterranean, sits little-bitty ol’ Israel.

And what is Israel to do?  Their enemies are armed to the teeth, with the weapons the United States has sold them – including the fighter jets manned by crews trained at airbases in the United States.

And with Obama in the White House, they don’t even know if we’re an ally anymore.

One thing is certain – if Israel is lost, we won’t be far behind.

I’m Jim Sumpter and that’s “My Take”.

My Take – For Wednesday, 02/02/11:

The end of Egypt.

This is Jim Sumpter

The end of Egypt isn’t the end of Egypt…it’s the end of Egypt being the lead story on the news.

This hit me today while doing my radio show.  I had invited a friend of mine on the air to explain what was happening in Egypt.

After forty minutes, as the hour closed, any casual listener of my show would have been even more confused by his explanation that made no sense.

And then it hit me.  Egypt isn’t the story Obama needs.

It’s too…well, I was going to say it’s too complicated to get our arms around, but it’s not really – the Middle East isn’t just another part of the world…it’s another world.

A world that cannot be understood.

A world to be left alone.

Unfortunately, Obama can’t leave anything alone.  Confusion gives him cohesion, appearing to give sense to his nonsense.

I’m Jim Sumpter and that’s “My Take”.
