NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH UPDATE
SEPTEMBER-2008
By Linda Marie, Westminster Neighborhood Watch Captain.
A Neighborhood Watch e-mail list has been established to inform our residents about the types of activities that pose an emotional unstable threat and danger to our families, property and common areas. If you wish to be on this list please call or send an e-mail to our property management. There contact information is listed in our Newsletter.
When leaving in the early morning I have seen many of the older residents walking and jogging, then later in the evening, couples and groups of families bicycling, jogging and walking with their dogs and kids. This type of activity is the way it should be as this is one of the many reasons you have chosen to live in our all American City. This is America the land of the free and home of the brave and residents need to know who their neighbors are to keep our community safe. Just passing and giving a warm greeting to each one is a show of respect and recognizing those who we see regularly, knowing they live within walking distance. Also an exchange of concerns should be shared for our family and community’s safety. You need to recognize the children, teenagers and adults that live in our community from those that are intruders, trespassing, not guests and using our common areas for illegal means. Our property is a private community of residential and owner occupied homes. Our common area is Not a Public Park for unauthorized use of our facilities (lawns, sidewalks, pools, clubhouse, tennis courts, bathrooms, showers and parking areas).
As a resident and homeowner you need to become aware of unruly young intimating males who live within our community and gangs who enjoy inflecting verbal fear on the young children and intimating adults, this leads to residential burglaries and home invasions along with graffiti tag crews, drug dealers and dumpster divers. Criminal’s get uneasy and do not come around when they see our community is very active with residents talking and walking around the plaza sidewalks and interior streets.
Our Board of Directors are responsible for maintaining the common areas of our community to keep our landscape, pools, buildings and signs in good condition, with shrubs trimmed allowing light to filter through large and small bushes. When this is neglected it becomes an attraction for uncivilized males to come into a jungle to claim territory for gang control, turf wars and dark places for criminals to hide drugs, weapons and watch activities of residents waiting for opportunities to plan future crimes. When you notice these un-kept areas collecting trash, graffiti on block walls, signs, sidewalks and curbs in our community, or unknown materials hidden in bushes take a picture so the location can be found and notify our property management company.
With the down turn of our economy, as you have seen in the news there has been increases in the criminal culture and takeovers of unattended homes and private property. We must keep our community free from crimes and it can only happen when we as homeowners and residents respect our community and property by opening our eyes and speaking up about our concerns. All you need to do is report your observations; you do not need to become involved.
I have spoken with our City of Westminster Police Department Patrol Officers and they want to be notified so never hesitate from calling the police about suspicious activity or unknown persons lurking within our common areas. This is your community and home, lets keep it safe and free from criminal activity don’t allow them to make you or our community their next victim.
