“Have to” or “Choose to”… Musings of a summer day by MARY SMITH

Bookmark and Share

As I was sitting at my desk pondering the fact that the AC isn’t working I realized that summer has truly arrived. A week ago it was cool and I was wondering if the weather would ever change, now that it has, and I have no air conditioning in my office for the moment I found myself grumping about that. Then a thought hit me…

That thought was a simple one – in life there are many choices we  make, some we have to make but others we get to make. We may think the choices that are forced are the more important, and maybe at a singular moment in time, they are, however I truly believe it’s the decisions that we choose to make that are of the larger impact on our life in the long term.

For example, you have a child that is hurt fairly bad- you have to decide “Doctor or no doctor?” This is generally an obvious decision; broken bone= doctor… important, yes! Does it effect the rest of our life, not usually.

However there are a couple seemingly small decisions that we all can make on a daily basis that not only effect us but can reflect on those around us, as well as set forth a pattern that can define the very person that we are.

One of those small decisions; am I going to be in a good mood or a bad one? I am guilty, there are days that I flat out choose to be in a bad mood. It isn’t necessarily that I want to be a grump, I just find it easier to go with the bad attitude than choose to change it and bring about a good one. If I ‘go with the flow’ my day will reflect it, in every way and it will be made more miserable for all those I come into contact with. On the flip side, if I make the decision to change my mood it will also impact those around me, and could brighten their day a bit.

The one that really triggered this whole thought-line was thankfulness. It is something we choose, we can either  choose to be thankful for things or bitter about life. Seriously, I could be bitter about the AC being down… it’s going to be hot today! Or I can choose to be thankful for the pool in the backyard at home for after work. I can focus on the warmth or I can appreciate the fact that there is a light breeze blowing at the moment and giving some air flow. If I focus on the negative, it will make me more negative, however if I choose to focus on the positive then guess what? I will be more positive and happy… good choice!

I’m sure that if you think about things you can find plenty more examples of small thoughts that can have big impacts on your life and outlook on the day to day. Yes life is a series of choices, all will impact our life one way or another.

So to take a quote from an Indiana Jones movie and alter it just a bit… You must choose wisely for as the positive choices bring life the negative ones take it from you.

Have an awesome Friday and CHOOSE WISELY!!!!
