A Border Perspective by Glenn Smith Jr

Last week we were “treated” to a blistering speech from Mexican President Felipe Calderon. In his speech he tore into our immigration policies and attacked the State of Arizona for having the audacity to try to protect its citizens by passing a law that restates Federal Immigration law. Our own President Obama smugly stood by as the Democrats in Congress gave this “invited” guest a standing ovation for embarrassing our country.

This, by itself, really was upsetting. How dare our elected officials applaud someone who is not much more that a dictator in his own right and allow our great nation to be disparaged in the halls of congress itself.

Athough, upon further review, I think that Mr. Calderon may have been on to something after all. When you compare the way we handle ILLEGAL immigrants (the proper term is criminal aliens) to other nations, including Mexico, I can see why someone would find room to criticize. Just take a look at something I received in an email today and decide for yourself:

Let Me See if I got this right:

IF YOU CROSS THE NORTH KOREAN BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU GET 12 YEARS HARD LABOR.

IF YOU CROSS THE IRANIAN BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU ARE DETAINED INDEFINITELY.

IF YOU CROSS THE AFGHAN BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU GET SHOT.

IF YOU CROSS THE SAUDI ARABIAN BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU WILL BE JAILED.

IF YOU CROSS THE CHINESE BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU MAY NEVER BE HEARD FROM AGAIN.

IF YOU CROSS THE VENEZUELAN BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU WILL BE BRANDED A SPY AND YOUR FATE WILL BE SEALED.

IF YOU CROSS THE CUBAN BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU WILL BE THROWN INTO POLITICAL PRISON TO ROT.

IF YOU CROSS THE U.S. BORDER ILLEGALLY, YOU GET —

  1 – A JOB,

2 – A DRIVERS LICENSE,

3 – SOCIAL SECURITY CARD,

4 – WELFARE,

5 – FOOD STAMPS,

6 – CREDIT CARDS,

7 – SUBSIDIZED RENT OR A LOAN TO BUY A HOUSE,

8 – FREE EDUCATION,

9 – FREE HEALTH CARE,

10 – A LOBBYIST IN WASHINGTON,

11 – BILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF PUBLIC DOCUMENTS PRINTED IN YOUR LANGUAGE

12 – AND THE RIGHT TO CARRY YOUR NATIVE COUNTRY’S FLAG WHILE YOU PROTEST THAT YOU DON’T GET ENOUGH RESPECT!

I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE I HAD A FIRM GRASP OF THE SITUATION.

Maybe we should have the exact same immigration policy as Mexico.

If you are an illegal alien in Mexico and can’t produce a valid visa then you will be immediately delivered to the nearest office of Migracion and jailed there along with the illegal aliens from Central America.

Instead of immediately deporting you, they will insist on up to $1000 “Bail” and you may be there quite a while if you cant come up with the kick back.

People from Central America are processed and generally taken to the Border with Guatemala and released without bail because they have no money. U.S. Citizens get the “special” treatment because Mexican officials know they can demand more money.

There really is no advantage in flouting the immigration laws in Mexico. Here in the US, there certainly is an advantage to taking the chance. You can’t get in the “welfare” system in Mexico without proper documentation. Mexico is way ahead of the US in this area.

Why won’t Mexico give out what it is demanding? Why shouldn’t illegal immigrants in Mexico have the same rights to jobs, free healthcare, food stamps, subsidized rent and education as illegal immigrants in the U.S. do?
