Buy American!

I recently read an article on one of the internet news sites takling about a provision in the stimulus bill being considered in Congress. I found it very interesting the amount of negative comments being thrown about, until I saw whhere those comments were comming from.

We live in a “global” economy , or at least that is what the powers that be are trying to tell us. Now I want to preface this next statement with this, I am neither protectionist or isolationist in my views. I try to be more of a realist, if anything. There can be no global economy without healthy, vibrant, growing local economies. This great nation was built on the concept of a free market, locally owned form of commerce. There was a time when the US was the largest producer of goods, not just the largest consumer. We have now lost our way there. The world leaders, as well as the CEO’s of major foreign companies know this. If the US were to ever regain its foothold in the manufacturing segment, it would again start to show major strength in the financial segments as well. This would LESSEN the need for outside financial assistance. If we as a nation were to start using our own products first, these outside counties and companies would be seriously weakened.

As I read the comments concerning trade wars and the like, I have to laugh. We are the largest consumer in the world. If you want us to keep on consuming your products, don’t anger us. The world needs a healthy US economy. I have no problem with my tax dollars being used to fix roads and schools as long as these dollars are also being used to put as many US citizens to work as possible. If that means that companies doing business with the US government have to buy products and materials from US companies, so be it. The rest of the world can take a hike. If I am going to have to fund these grand projects, I want the greatest return for my tax dollar. I want to see new manufaturing jobs created because a contractor in that area needed steel or something else to finish the job. I want to see LOCAL contractors winning the bids and put LOCAL workers to work. If the unions really care about their people, they should be pushing for this as well.

If a foreign government or corporation wants our money, they can offer their products through the normal retail or wholesale routes. In the private  sector, all is fair game. But if taxpayer money is involved, KEEP IT HOME!
